Dr. Mika graduated from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine.  After graduation, he practiced in Watertown, South Dakota at Lake Area Veterinary clinic, which is a mixed animal practice reminiscent of classic James Herriot books. In 1993, his family moved to Greeley, Colorado where Dr. Mika joined Mackey Veterinary Service.
